Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust has announced that its Chief Executive Officer, Sir Mark Grundy, will retire at the end of the 2025/26 academic year following a distinguished career in education spanning over 41 years.
Sir Mark, who was knighted in 2006 for services to education and technology, has been a transformative figure in the region’s educational landscape. After leading Shireland Collegiate Academy as Principal, he took on the role of founding CEO and has overseen the Trust’s growth to 12 schools across the West Midlands, known for their innovation and impact.
During his leadership, the Trust has achieved consistently strong outcomes and national recognition for its pioneering use of technology and digital learning. Most of its academies are now rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
Reflecting on his time with the Trust, Sir Mark said: “It has been an immense privilege to serve as CEO of Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust. Watching the Trust grow and witnessing the incredible dedication of our staff and students has been the highlight of my career. I am confident that the Trust is in a strong position for the future, and I look forward to supporting a smooth transition to new leadership.”
To support this transition, Sir Mark will remain with the Trust in an advisory role for one day a week during the 2026/27 academic year.

He has contributed to education policy in the region and nationally, led some highly innovative partnerships and projects, and always ensured this work is informed by and further improves the quality of education locally. We will always be grateful for his vision and outstanding service and the legacy he leaves.”
The Trust will launch its search for a new CEO in July 2025, aiming to appoint in time for the start of the 2026/27 academic year.
