Sixth Form Students Explore Music Careers with WaterBear College of Music

Year 12 students at Shireland CBSO Academy were given an insider’s view of the music industry when Jamie Mace from WaterBear College of Music visited the school to deliver an engaging session on degree courses and career opportunities.

The visit formed part of the Academy’s post-16 programme to help students make informed choices about life after Sixth Form.

WaterBear College of Music, based in Sheffield, was founded by music educators Adam Bushell and Bruce John Dickinson and brings together more than 30 years of professional music experience with the highest levels of music education. The college is also dedicated to supporting musicians and artists who are focused on building sustainable, long-term careers.

During the session, Mace highlighted the variety of pathways available within the music industry, including performance, production, live events and digital media. Students were encouraged to reflect on their own creative projects and received tailored advice on music production and portfolio development.

The workshop also provided practical guidance on pursuing music at higher education, helping students to understand both the academic requirements and the skills needed for a successful career in the industry.

David Green, Principal at Shireland CBSO Academy, said: “Visits from industry experts like Jamie are invaluable for our students. They give young people a real understanding of what different industries involve and support them in making informed decisions when considering their futures.

“We want every student to leave our Sixth Form equipped with the knowledge and skills to confidently plan their next steps and understand what’s needed for success and talks like this play a crucial role in achieving that.”

Students left the session feeling inspired and better prepared to explore the many creative and professional avenues open to them in music and beyond. Applications for Year 12 places at Shireland CBSO Academy Sixth Form starting September 2026 are now open.
