Shireland Collegiate Academy in Smethwick has been recognised as a Microsoft Elevate Showcase School for the 2026-27 academic year, highlighting its continued work of using digital technology to enhance teaching, learning and the wider student experience.
The Academy has been part of the Microsoft Showcase Schools programme for a number of years, using technology to support creative and engaging teaching, improve efficiency and prepare students for an increasingly digital world.
A key part of Shireland’s approach is investing in teachers’ digital skills and confidence. The Academy provides bespoke professional development to help staff make purposeful use of technology in the classroom, while keeping curriculum and student needs at the heart of their approach.
Many teachers have achieved Microsoft Educator Expert and Certified Expert accreditations, while staff also work with external EdTech organisations, including Microsoft, to develop their expertise and share best practice with a wider education technology community.
For students, the focus goes beyond simply using digital tools. Shireland aims to develop their technological literacy, helping them engage confidently with a digitally rich curriculum while understanding how to use technology responsibly and make informed choices.
Thomas Daly, Principal of Shireland Collegiate Academy, said: “Technology should enhance great teaching, not replace it. Used well, it gives teachers more opportunities to be creative and responsive, while giving students new ways to explore ideas, solve problems and take ownership of their learning.
“We also want our students to use technology confidently and responsibly, understanding both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with living in an increasingly digital world. Being recognised as a Microsoft Elevate Showcase School reflects our commitment to making technology purposeful, enriching the curriculum and helping our students develop the knowledge, confidence and curiosity they need to thrive beyond school.”
Microsoft Showcase Schools form part of an international community committed to transforming learning through technology. The programme connects institutions across the globe, enabling them to share best practice, access expert support and collaborate with leaders driving change in education.
Shireland Collegiate Academy will continue to develop its use of digital technology, ensuring it remains purposeful, creative and relevant to students’ learning.
