Trust leads the way with innovative solar panels project

The Trust has taken a bold step towards a greener future by implementing a groundbreaking solar panels project. Designed to address rising electricity costs and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, the initiative showcases the Trust’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Working with Solar for Schools (SfS), a not-for-profit community of schools dedicated to delivering low-cost, zero-carbon renewable solar electricity, the Trust has set its sights on achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. This partnership not only reduces energy costs but also enhances learning opportunities for staff and students, integrating education for sustainable development into everyday practice.

The project comes at a critical time as the Trust seeks to hedge against fluctuating energy prices while cutting its reliance on external electricity suppliers. The solar panels, installed across 11 sites so far, are expected to generate significant energy savings, contributing to long-term financial stability. The panels have produced 345,540 kWh of solar electricity in the 2024/25 year so far, preventing an estimated 68.08 tonnes of carbon emissions, the equivalent of one person flying between Birmingham and Paris 412 times.

Financially, the initiative has saved the Trust approximately £7,000 in energy costs, with cumulative savings continuing to grow.

Through this project, the Trust is actively aligning with the Department for Education’s pedagogy strategy by embedding sustainability into the curriculum. Students and staff are given opportunities to learn about renewable energy technologies, climate action, and sustainable practices, enriching their understanding and fostering eco-conscious behaviours.

Sir Mark Grundy, CEO of the Trust, said: “The solar panels project marks the beginning of an exciting journey for the Trust. With plans to expand the initiative to additional sites, we remain at the forefront of sustainable development in the education sector. As progress continues, we hope to inspire others to follow suit.”
