Shireland CBSO Academy and Shireland Biomedical UTC were delighted to welcome the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) University for a dedicated careers talk with their sixth form students. The visit offered a behind-the-scenes look at the creative industries, specifically careers in music.
The talk formed part of the Academy’s programme to support students in making informed decisions about their post-18 destinations. It highlighted a range of career pathways and demonstrated how these roles connect directly to the degree courses offered by BIMM.
Students explored careers that fall beyond the role of performance, including production, management, media and creative technologies. This helped challenge common perceptions of what working in the music industry can involve. Representatives from BIMM also explained how the University works closely with industry partners to ensure its courses reflect real-world expectations and professional practice.
Jo Lawrence, Head of Sixth Form at Shireland CBSO Academy and Shireland Biomedical UTC, commented: “Many of our students are passionate about music and the creative industries, but the full range of careers available to them are not always visible.
“This workshop helped to demystify the industry and showed students how creativity, academic study and professional opportunity can align. Hearing first-hand about the realities of creative careers and routes into them prompted thoughtful discussion and reflection among our students. That is exactly what we aim to achieve at this stage of their journey.”
With 40 years’ experience in creative education, BIMM University specialises in courses across music, film, media and performing arts. Its global community of more than 9,000 students from 60 countries benefit from industry led teaching, professional networks and hands-on learning designed to meet the needs of today’s creative industries.
The academies continue to work closely with higher education and apprenticeship providers, including industry partners to ensure students are well supported as they plan their progression beyond sixth form.
