Students from Thorns Collegiate Academy in Brierley Hill joined 90 young people from 18 schools across England at the 7th Annual National Youth Conference, organised by the Anne Frank Trust UK in Manchester. The conference, held under the theme ‘Bridging Generations’, focused on challenging antisemitism, hate crime, and discrimination.
Students in attendance had previously attended a two-day Peer Education workshop, which equipped them with the skills to share their learning within their schools. During the conference, they worked in groups to develop and present projects aimed at challenging and discrimination, demonstrating creativity, empathy, and confidence.
A highlight of the event was a panel discussion featuring leading figures, including Kate Green, Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester, who reaffirmed the region’s commitment to tackling antisemitism and discrimination. Students also took part in expert-led workshops. These covered Holocaust education with Hannah Randall from Holocaust Centre North, a survivor testimony from Anne Super via The Fed’s My Voice project, creative storytelling with Phil Okwedy, and speechwriting and confidence-building with Joey Leskin.
School Principal Nikki Jones commented: “We are very proud of our students, who approached every activity with maturity and sensitivity. They listened, engaged, and reflected thoughtfully, showing amazing levels of empathy and commitment.
“It was inspiring to see them work collaboratively and present their ideas with confidence. They were exceptional ambassadors for the school and the values we uphold. Experiences like this show just how much young people can contribute to building a fairer and more inclusive society.”
The Anne Frank Trust UK is a global education charity that empowers young people to challenge prejudice, promote equal right, and work towards a society free from discrimination. Inspired by Anne Frank’s life and diary, the Trust runs the Anne Frank Youth Network, an international community of 16-26-year-olds who develop projects and initiatives that promote inclusivity, tolerance, human rights, and democratic values.
Thorns Collegiate Academy continues to provide students with opportunities to broaden their horizons and develop both academically and personally. Through experiences such as the Anne Frank Youth Conference, the school seeks to empower students to make a positive impact in their communities.
