A new alternative provision, the CHANGE Centre, has been introduced at Thorns Collegiate Academy in Brierley Hill to support students at risk of repeat suspension or permanent exclusion.
The Change Centre offers a high‑impact, structured six‑week intervention for young people who are experiencing difficulties with emotional regulation and engagement in mainstream education. The programme is designed to build self‑awareness, support reflection and personal growth, and equip students with the skills needed to make sustained, positive changes, re‑connect with learning, and re‑engage with school life.
The provision combines a focused academic curriculum with a strong emphasis on personal development. Students continue to study core subjects including English, mathematics and science, aligned to their age and key stage. Teaching is delivered through a blend of online learning and in-person support from experienced staff.
Alongside academic work, the programme places a clear focus on social, emotional and physical development. Students take part in a structured curriculum that promotes resilience, teamwork, discipline and positive behaviour.
Outdoor learning plays a key role in the CHANGE Centre offer. Each week, students attend Challenge Academy in South Staffordshire, where they take part in practical and engaging activities led by qualified staff. These sessions are designed to build confidence, communication skills, problem solving and resilience in a supportive environment.
Positive behaviour and effort are recognised throughout the programme, with students earning praise, certificates and privileges to support motivation and engagement.
A three-week Circuit Breaker Programme is also offered for students who need a shorter, intensive intervention to reset behaviour, develop self-regulation and prepare for a supported return to school.
Students with more complex needs, including those with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), will be assessed on an individual basis, with costs adjusted depending on the level of support required.
Schools interested in learning more about the CHANGE Centre or arranging a visit are encouraged to get in touch to discuss how the provision could support students at a critical stage in their education.
