Gulfam Shahzad
Principal of Shireland Biomedical UTC
Gulfam Shahzad is the Principal of Shireland Biomedical UTC, having taken up the role in Summer 2024. He brings extensive leadership experience across a range of secondary schools, with a strong track record of driving school improvement and raising standards.

Throughout his career, Gulfam has held a number of senior leadership positions, including Head of Science, Assistant Principal for Raising Standards, Data, Assessment, Exams and Quality Assurance, Head of House, Vice Principal for Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, and Associate Principal with Trust-wide responsibility for attendance.
His key achievements include supporting several challenging schools to move beyond special measures and achieve strong outcomes. He has led cross-trust attendance strategies, improving attendance and removing barriers to learning for students through streamlined and consistent systems. Gulfam has also developed rigorous quality assurance processes and strategic improvements that have led to stronger Progress 8 outcomes across multiple schools, with some achieving their best results to date.
Gulfam holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, alongside a PGCE and Postgraduate Diploma. His passion for education is rooted in a belief that every child deserves access to an excellent education and the opportunities this creates for families and the wider community. His philosophy is simple – if something is not good enough for your own child, then it is not good enough for any student.
As Principal, Gulfam is committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where all students can thrive, regardless of background or ability. He believes in providing enriching opportunities, maintaining high expectations alongside strong support, and ensuring that stakeholder voice helps shape school improvement. The values that guide his leadership are hard work, dedication, kindness, and integrity.
Outside of school, Gulfam enjoys spending time with his family, playing five-a-side indoor football, and badminton.
