Tinywoods Preschool pupils explore sustainability through hands-on play

Staff at Tinywoods Preschool in Oldbury have been supporting children to explore sustainability through practical, play-based activities focused on recycling, reuse and caring for the environment.

Children have taken part in hands-on recycling activities, including sorting everyday materials and discussing what happens to waste. Staff also introduced simple conversations around reusing items and looking after natural spaces, using guided play to support learning while encouraging children to make simple decisions about where items belong and why.

The activities are part of the nursery’s wider approach to early years learning, which embeds environmental awareness through play, routines and exploration.

Nursery Managers, Heather Wilkinson and Kam Koasha, said: “We find that children engage most with new ideas when they can explore them in a practical way. Sustainability can feel like a big concept, but by introducing it through everyday experiences, children begin to understand that looking after the environment is something they can take part in themselves.”

Staff said children are beginning to apply what they have learned during everyday activities, particularly when handling and sorting materials independently.
