Shireland Collegiate Academy’s sixth form successfully completed a full-day charity bike-a-thon in support of Acorns Children’s Charity, raising £876 to help support children and families across the West Midlands. Following the success of last year’s event, the fundraiser returned for a second year, bringing students and staff together to support the cause.
Acorns Children’s Charity provides specialist palliative care and support for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, as well as their families. Fundraising events such as this play an essential role in helping Acorns continue to deliver its vital service to those who rely on them.
Throughout the day, students and staff cycled on stationary bikes outside the sixth form centre, working to cover as many miles as possible. The event was supported by the Aston Villa Foundation, which works in close collaboration with Shireland Collegiate Academy to provide its Sixth Form Football Programme.
The Foundation’s involvement in the fundraiser highlighted the strong relationship between the Academy and the organisation, reflecting a shared commitment to community engagement and creating positive opportunities for young people.
The event concluded with a friendly football match between staff and sixth form students, a highlight that showcased the Academy’s sporting spirit and charitable focus. Mascots from both Aston Villa and Acorns were also present, helping to raise awareness and add to the atmosphere of the day.
Head of Sixth Form, Ben Brogan, said: “The enthusiasm and commitment shown by our students was genuinely impressive. Events like this demonstrate how motivated our young people are to support meaningful causes and make a positive difference to others. Working alongside the Aston Villa Foundation helped add to the exciting and purposeful atmosphere of the day and raising our grand total of £876 was a fantastic achievement. It’s a powerful example of what can be achieved when our students, staff and partners work together.”
