Newfield Park pupils learn about the people behind the emergency services

Reception pupils at Newfield Park Primary Academy welcomed members of the local police and fire service as part of their ‘People Who Help Us’ topic, giving them the opportunity to learn more about the vital work carried out by the emergency services.

During the visit, pupils discovered more about the responsibilities of police officers and firefighters and the important role they play in keeping their local community safe. They also had the opportunity to sit inside a police car, offering an exciting first-hand insight into the work of the police.

The visit formed part of the Academy’s Excite, Explore, Excel (E3L) curriculum, delivered across all primary schools within Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust. The programme encourages curiosity, fosters connections between subjects and helps pupils understand how their learning relates to the world around them.

School Principal, Steve Payne, commented: “We believe it’s important for children to understand the world beyond the classroom and the people who make such a difference to the communities which they live in. Meeting police officers and firefighters helps our youngest pupils recognise the vital work they do to protect people, support families and help others in times of need.

“These experiences build more than knowledge; they nurture curiosity, develop an appreciation of others and help children understand and appreciate their place within the wider community.”

The visit reflected the Academy’s commitment to providing meaningful encounters with people and organisations within the local community to support and enrich pupils’ learning, helping them develop a wider understanding of the world from an early age.
