Teaching Internships

Thinking of training to become a teacher?
- Are you an undergraduate studying mathematics, physics, chemistry, computing, design and technology or modern foreign languages?
- Are you interested in experiencing life as a teacher and being a part of educating the future?
- Have you ever thought about a career in teaching and want to find out what a career in teaching is like?
If so, register your interest to take part in our Paid Teaching Internship Programme, funded by the Department for Education.
You can be in year 2 onwards of an undergraduate degree course or be undertaking a masters course.
This is a three-week Internship which starts on the 15 June 2026 and interns will receive £455 per week – a total of £1,365 for full attendance on completion of the programme.
2026 Internships
We are intending to run the internships across Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust in June 2026 – if you are an undergraduate (not first year) or masters student at a UK university and would like to submit an expression of interest, click here and more information will be sent to you in early January 2026.
You’re eligible to apply for an internship if:
- You have not already applied for an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programme and have not already taken part in a DfE funded Teaching Internship.
- You are an undergraduate or masters student and not currently studying a PhD or opting for a career change.
- You are able to complete the full three-week placement in June.
- You have the right to work in the UK. If you are an international student, please check your current visa to establish your eligibility. Unfortunately, if you are an international student and do not have a current UK visa we are unable to support your application.






What does the internship involve?
We will use your address to place you in a school that is near to you when you apply and confirm this before you start your internship.
Travel to Shireland Academy Trust Training Centre in Oldbury is expected as part of the internship as the base for Shireland Academy Trust Teacher Training.
The programme involves:
- Structured training, shadowing and lesson observation followed by a chance to jointly plan and deliver lessons.
- A combination of teaching, running subject-related projects, offering intensive support for children who are struggling, helping with experiments and laboratory work.
- Opportunities to complete a project presentation which will be presented to members of the schools’ leadership teams.
- Access to one-to-one mentors who are inspirational classroom teachers in their specialism.
- Opportunities to network with qualified subject specialists.
