Twenty students in years 9 and 10 from Shireland Biomedical UTC in West Bromwich took part in a Women in STEM Day at the University of Birmingham. The visit formed part of a programme of workshops designed to encourage progression into science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Students toured the University of Birmingham campus and took part in interactive sessions led by academic staff and STEM professionals. Activities focused on practical problem-solving and creative thinking, giving students the opportunity to experience university-style learning and gain insight into STEM-related study and careers.
Students were praised for their engagement throughout the day, taking an active part in sessions, contributing to discussions and asking considered questions.
School Principal, Gulfam Shahzad, said: “Trips like this are so valuable because they take learning beyond the classroom and place it in a very different context, where students can see how subjects such as STEM connect directly to real careers and fast-growing industries.
“For many students, spending time on a university campus in this way is a first experience, and it often has a lasting impact. What matters most to us is that they return to school with a clearer sense of what is possible, greater confidence in their own direction and higher aspirations for the future. This is what we are continually working to develop through experiences like this, ensuring our students are given the very best opportunities to explore their next steps.”
The University of Birmingham is one of the UK’s leading universities and a member of the Russell Group, a network of research-intensive universities recognised for teaching excellence, research and industry collaboration. Established as the original ‘redbrick’ university, it has a long history of academic achievement and innovation.
Shireland Biomedical UTC continues to provide enriching learning opportunities designed to broaden students’ experience and aspirations, and support informed choices about future study and careers.
