Pupils mark World Environment Day at Newfield

Newfield Park Primary Academy marked World Environment Day with a range of school-based activities focused on sustainability and climate change.

The annual event, coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme, is observed globally to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage action to protect the planet.

At the school, pupils took part in a non-uniform day, wearing green and blue clothing to reflect the environmental theme. They also engaged in science-based learning linked to the natural world, including observing and recording the growth of classroom plants over time.

The school’s Parent Teacher Association also donated new world globes, supporting geography teaching and helping pupils explore and discuss the wider world. Children were also given seeds to take home, plant and care for, helping them develop a more hands-on understanding of nature.

School Principal, Steve Payne, said: “Helping children understand the importance of looking after the environment is an important part of their learning. They are growing up at a time when climate change and its impact on nature is more prevalent than ever, and we want them to understand what that means in a way that feels real to them. It’s about building respect for the natural world, understanding that it needs protecting, and encouraging small habits now that will stay with them as they grow.”

The Academy also has a Forest School provision, which supports outdoor learning and provides pupils with regular opportunities to explore nature, observe seasonal change and develop their understanding of the environment as part of the wider curriculum.

Through activities both in school and at home, World Environment Day provided pupils with the opportunity to develop a deeper appreciation of the natural world and the role they can play in helping to protect it for future generations.
