Prospective sixth form students and their families are being invited to explore Shireland CBSO Academy and its post-16 provision at its upcoming Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 19 November from 4.30pm to 7.00pm.
Visitors will be able to tour the Academy, meeting teaching staff and current students, and find out more about the wide range of A level and vocational courses available for September 2027 entry. The evening will also showcase the Academy’s specialist music and creative provision, including the wider opportunities available through its partnership with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), alongside Laney Amplification. These partnerships provide students with valuable opportunities to develop their skills, gain industry knowledge and experience and explore their interests beyond the classroom.
The Academy offers a broad Sixth Form experience, combining academic study with personal development, enrichment and opportunities to explore future pathways. Students have access to dedicated study and social spaces and specialist facilities including a 270-seat auditorium, recording studio, drama studio, practice rooms and sports facilities.
While music is a key part of the Academy’s identity, students do not need to have studied music formally to apply to the Sixth Form. The Academy recognises that students develop interests and skills in different ways, including through playing, performing, songwriting, producing or learning independently. All students have access to free instrumental or vocal tuition, including opportunities to work with professional musicians through the Academy’s partnership with the CBSO.
Alongside their studies, students benefit from dedicated pastoral and wellbeing support and an extensive enrichment programme designed to develop the skills and qualities needed for higher education and employment. This includes opportunities in volunteering, sport, musical events and wider personal development, with activities tailored to students’ interests and aspirations.
The Academy’s partnerships also provide opportunities beyond the classroom. Through its relationship with the CBSO, students can access performance opportunities, masterclasses, workshops and bespoke career experiences. Its partnership with Laney Amplification offers practical workshops, mentoring, industry insight and work experience for students interested in music technology and related careers.
