Shireland Biomedical UTC Launches Career-Focused Pathways with support of Birmingham City University

Shireland Biomedical UTC in West Bromwich is pleased to announce the launch of three innovative post-16 pathway courses, developed with the support of Birmingham City University. These pathways are designed to equip students with the essential skills, qualifications, and practical experience necessary for careers in nursing and midwifery, paramedics, early years and primary teaching.

At a time when both the healthcare and education sectors are facing critical workforce shortages, these pathways offer a vital route into high-demand professions, ensuring students are well prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Starting in September 2025, students can enrol in one of three specialist pathways, each combining expert-led learning, practical experience, and university-standard workshops.

The Nursing and Midwifery Pathway will provide students with foundational healthcare knowledge and skills, enabling them to support patient care and wellbeing. Through a mix of classroom learning and practical experience, students gain insight into key healthcare roles. The Paramedic Pathway focuses on essential training in emergency response and patient care, preparing students for frontline roles in fast-paced medical environments.

The Early Years and Primary Teaching Pathway is ideal for students passionate about working with children. Combining theoretical learning with classroom experience, this pathway helps students develop a deep understanding of child development, teaching methods, and educational support.

Each pathway is designed to integrate academic study with practical training, ensuring students develop both a strong theoretical foundation and valuable hands-on experience. This approach not only equips students with essential skills but also a competitive edge in their chosen fields.

Furthermore, students enrolled on these pathways will be guaranteed interviews at Birmingham City University, offering them a clear and supportive pathway into higher education and further specialisation in their career aspirations.

Jo Lawrence, Head of Sixth Form at Shireland Biomedical UTC, commented: “We are thrilled to introduce these career-focused pathways with the support of Birmingham City University. This partnership ensures our students receive an exceptional education, directly aligned with industry needs and future career opportunities.

“Our commitment to high-quality, industry-driven learning means students will leave us fully prepared for the demands of their professions, whether in healthcare or education. We are proud to play a role in shaping the next generation of medical, healthcare and teaching professionals.”

Professor Ian Blair, Executive Dean, Health, Education and Life Sciences, BCU, said:

“Our work alongside Shireland is a further demonstration of our strategic commitment to developing the talent for tomorrow. Our commitment to the region sees us forging valuable partnerships with organisations that share our vision for providing practical education for young people, enabling them to flourish in their chosen career path, and to power the frontline of health and education services within the West Midlands.

“By supporting Shireland, we will make a significant contribution towards BCU achieving its wider goals.”

With these new opportunities, Shireland Biomedical UTC reaffirms its commitment to shaping the future workforce and inspiring young minds to pursue meaningful and fulfilling careers. By equipping students with industry-relevant skills and experience, the Academy is ensuring they are well-positioned to make a difference in their chosen fields and beyond.
