Year 7 students at Shireland CBSO Academy took part in a careers-focused day exploring pathways into professional orchestras, the wider music industry and progression into further and higher education in music.
The school welcomed guest speaker Parv Kaur, the UK’s first female dhol drummer, who delivered an insight into her career in the music industry. She has performed at venues and events including Glastonbury Festival, the BBC, The Graham Norton Show and London’s West End. She has also received recognition from the House of Commons for her contribution to bhangra music in the UK.
After a question-and-answer session with Kaur, students took part in dhol drumming workshops led by her, gaining practical experience in rhythm, technique and ensemble performance.
David Green, Principal at Shireland CBSO Academy, said: “Careers education is most effective when it’s grounded in real experiences and encounters with current professionals. Having musicians such as Parv Kaur, who works at the highest level of her field, visit the Academy helps students to broaden their understanding of the music industry and the skills required to succeed within it. These experiences also support students in building the confidence, ambition and knowledge they need for their next steps.”
The event formed part of the Academy’s ongoing commitment to providing students with access to industry professionals and meaningful careers education in music.
