Pupils at Shireland Technology Primary explored the science of summer before putting their learning into practice with LEGO® during a hands-on Experience Day delivered by Creative Hut.
The day began with pupils exploring how the Sun’s position in the sky changes throughout the year and why it appears higher in the sky during summer than in winter. The session provided an opportunity to consider the science behind the changing seasons before applying that learning through a practical activity.
Pupils were then given instructions to build their own floats for a Summer Sunshine Parade using LEGO®, combining construction with their science learning and working together to bring their ideas to life. The activity required careful listening, patience and perseverance, as well as the ability to collaborate and follow instructions.
Associate Principal, Andy Collins, said: “Workshops like this are an important part of how we approach learning at Shireland Technology Primary. We want our pupils to have opportunities to take what they have learned and apply it in a different context, because that is when knowledge and skills really begin to come together.
“Working with Creative Hut gave our children a practical challenge that required them to listen carefully, make decisions, solve problems and work with others, while also giving them the freedom to be creative. It was a great example of how bringing different expertise and experiences into school can enrich our curriculum and give pupils another way to engage with their learning.”
Creative Hut is a STEAM education provider which works with schools to deliver practical learning experiences across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).
With more than 20 years’ experience in STEAM education, the company works with education and technology partners, including LEGO Education and Sphero, to provide hands-on workshops and resources for children.
The session was reflective of the school’s wider approach to teaching and learning, where practical experiences are used to help pupils apply their knowledge, explore ideas and understand how learning can be used beyond the classroom.
