Shireland Academies Mark 80th Anniversary of VE Day

Students and staff across Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust came together this month to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a series of thoughtful and meaningful activities. The day offered an opportunity to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who lived through the Second World War, while helping students understand the significance of this pivotal moment in history.

Across the Trust, the day began with a two-minute silence. Staff and students stood united in reflection and solidarity, paying tribute to the men and women who served, and to the countless lives affected by the conflict. This quiet act of remembrance set a respectful tone for the events that followed.

Special assemblies were held throughout the day, providing students with the chance to explore the events of 8 May 1945 and the lasting impact VE Day had on communities across Britain and Europe. Wartime stories were shared to help younger generations connect with the resilience, unity and hope that defined the era. In some schools, these sessions were enriched with historical footage, guided discussions, and question-and-answer opportunities, encouraging learners to engage more deeply with the past.

Creative activities also formed a central part of the day, including letter writing, paper poppy crafting and discussions on how young people can contribute to peace and community in today’s world. In several schools, pupils engaged directly with local history through visits to war memorials or correspondence with veterans, forging personal connections to the experiences and sacrifices of those who came before them.

The day concluded with moments of celebration, echoing the joyful spirit of 1945. Students enjoyed tea parties and picnics, many dressed in red, white and blue, as the sounds of 1940s music filled the air. Handmade flags and decorations added to the atmosphere, capturing a sense of pride and remembrance.

Through these shared experiences, schools across the Trust not only honoured the past but also reinforced the values of gratitude, empathy and resilience. The 80th anniversary of VE Day served as a powerful reminder of the importance of collective memory, and the role today’s young people play in shaping a more peaceful and unified future.
