Shireland Trust schools explore coding and AI with Minecraft

Students at Shireland Collegiate Academy and Shireland Technology Primary took part in a special Minecraft Education Learning Day, exploring creativity, coding, and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in a safe and structured environment.

The event, led by Justin, the lead at Minecraft, gave students hands-on opportunities to build, problem solve, and collaborate in virtual worlds linked to their classroom learning. At Shireland Technology Primary, year 6 pupils connected their digital self-portraits to projects on the Globe while tackling coding challenges. At Shireland Collegiate Academy, older students showcased collaborative projects and immersive lessons that extend classroom ideas into interactive digital spaces.

Thomas Daly, Principal at Shireland Collegiate Academy, added: “The visit highlighted how digital tools like Minecraft can support creativity, teamwork, and problem solving at a deeper level. Pupils were sharing ideas, reflecting on their work, and exploring new ways to learn across subjects. It reinforced how immersive, technology-rich projects make learning meaningful and engaging.”

Andy Collins, Associate Principal at Shireland Technology Primary, said: “What stood out was how our pupils could connect their Minecraft creations directly to their classroom learning. They weren’t just building, they were testing ideas, problem solving, and connecting their own ideas and digital work to their classroom lessons in tangible ways. Seeing them collaborate and be able to explain their thinking really showed the value of hands-on, technology-enabled learning.”

Minecraft Education is a version of the popular game designed specifically for learning. Students can explore and build in safe, digital worlds while developing key skills such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and digital citizenship. The platform supports subjects including reading, maths, history, and coding, and provides ready-made lessons, open-world environments, and tools for documenting and sharing creations.

Minecraft is a 3D sandbox game developed by Mojang Studios, where players explore and build in block-based worlds. Since its launch in 2011, Minecraft has become a global phenomenon, engaging millions of players worldwide.

The Minecraft Education Learning Day encouraged students to explore responsible and safe use of AI, combining creativity, collaboration, and digital citizenship to prepare them for the challenges of the future.
