A group of students from Shireland Collegiate Academy have reached the national Apps for Good Final after developing an innovative app designed to help children and families access essential educational resources and support.
Feed and Earn was developed in response to concerns that some young people do not always have access to the resources they need to thrive at school. The platform connects eligible families with charity-funded support, including free stationery, school meal assistance and food vouchers, helping to remove barriers and improve access to essential resources.
The app also features an AI-powered tracking system designed to monitor student progress and provide personalised recommendations, helping learners work towards rewards while further supporting their engagement with learning.
This achievement continues Shireland Collegiate Academy’s strong track record in the Apps for Good Showcase, with students having reached the finals in previous years. It also reflects the success of teams from across Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust, where opportunities such as Apps for Good support students to develop the skills and attributes that sit at the heart of the Trust’s ethos – collaboration, innovation and inspiration.
Through experiences like this, students are encouraged to apply their learning to real-world challenges, build confidence in their ideas and develop solutions that can make a positive impact.
Thomas Daly, Principal at Shireland Collegiate Academy, said: “Apps for Good gives our students the opportunity to use technology creatively to explore real-world challenges and develop solutions that can make a difference. The experience helps young people build valuable skills beyond the classroom, including collaboration, problem-solving and confidence in sharing their ideas.
“We are incredibly proud of the students behind Feed and Earn and the ambition and innovation they continue to demonstrate. Their success reflects the talent across the Academy and the wider Trust.”
Apps for Good is an education technology charity that works with schools and industry partners to empower young people to use technology to solve real-world problems. Through its free innovation courses, the charity supports students to develop skills in computing, research, teamwork, problem-solving and digital creation, helping young people develop solutions that create positive change.
As well as reaching the Apps for Good Final, Feed and Earn has also been selected for the People’s Choice Award, giving members of the public the opportunity to support their favourite student-created technology project. The award is decided by public vote, with voting closing at 5pm on Monday 22 June.
