Pupils at Tameside Primary Academy tested their roadside awareness during an interactive workshop led by Sandwell’s Road Safety team. Children and parents learned how to navigate local streets safely, including the correct use of crossings and ways to stay focused and avoid distractions.
Reception and year 3 pupils took part in practical walks around the local area, practising safe road-crossing and learning how to identify safe crossing points. Meanwhile, year 6 pupils focused on independent travel, planning routes, reinforcing road safety rules, and managing distractions as they prepare for the transition to secondary school.
The visit also included assemblies with interactive exercises to reinforce essential safety messages, from wearing seatbelts and using the correct car seats to staying alert while walking or cycling.
Cem Yalluri, Associate Principal, said: We are committed to equipping our pupils with the skills and understanding to make safe choices on every journey, whether walking, cycling or travelling by car.
“Workshops like these are invaluable in helping children develop positive lifelong habits, build confidence and cultivate independence, taking responsibility for their own safety both now and as they grow.”
The workshops highlighted the value of practical road safety education, helping pupils navigate roads confidently while supporting families and the wider community in promoting safer travel.
