Shireland students experience Shakespeare on stage at The Rep

Year 7 students from Shireland Collegiate Academy gained a fresh perspective on one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated plays during a visit to The Rep Theatre in Birmingham.

Students attended a live production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, immersing themselves in its world of fairies, love and mischief. The performance brought the text to life, deepening students’ understanding of Shakespeare’s language, characters and themes and supporting their classroom learning.

The visit formed part of the Academy’s commitment to enriching learning beyond the classroom, providing students with meaningful cultural experiences that complement the curriculum.

School Principal, Thomas Daly, said: “At Shireland, we’re committed to providing enriching experiences that deepen learning and help students make meaningful connections beyond the classroom. Theatre has a unique ability to bring literature to life, enabling young people to engage with challenging texts in a way that is both accessible and inspiring.

“Providing access to high-quality cultural experiences is central to our educational approach, helping to broaden horizons, build confidence and ensure every student develops the knowledge and cultural awareness needed to thrive in the future.”

Based in Centenary Square, The Rep is a long-established theatre and one of Birmingham’s leading producing theatres. Alongside staging its own productions and hosting touring performances, it plays an important role in supporting school and community engagement across the region.

The Academy looks forward to providing further opportunities that enhance learning and support students’ personal development through meaningful engagement with the arts and wider cultural experiences.
