Year 7 student Kaitlyn at Thorns Collegiate Academy has raised hundreds of pounds for a children’s cancer charity after donating her hair to support young people affected by hair loss.
Kaitlyn continues to fundraise for The Little Princess Trust, which provides real-hair wigs free of charge to children and young people who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or conditions such as alopecia.
The charity, established in 2006, also funds research into childhood cancers, focusing on developing kinder and less invasive treatments. To date, it has supported more than 20,000 children and has funded 158 research projects across the UK.
Kaitlyn had her long hair cut and donated as part of the fundraiser, with support from family, friends and the wider community. The appeal also carries personal significance for her, as it is being carried out in memory of a loved one. Her total currently stands at £450, with donations still being accepted online.
School Principal, Nikki Jones, commented: “Kaitlyn’s decision to take something so personal and turn it into support for others shows real thoughtfulness and maturity. For children undergoing treatment, losing their hair can have a significant impact on their confidence and identity. What she has done will help provide comfort and a sense of normality for those facing a very difficult time.
“At Thorns, we always encourage students to think beyond themselves and to make a positive difference wherever they can. Kaitlyn has done exactly that, and we are extremely proud of her.”
Donations can still be made by visiting the following JustGiving page, which remains open.
